The background of this page is made up from the crest, motto "I Hope in God", (in Gaelic this reads: "Tha mo dhochas ann an Dia") and Tartan of the MacNaughton Clan, of which the McBryans are a Sept (tribe), this means that they have a right to come under the protection of the MacNaughtons and are allowed to wear their Tartan.
The McBryan's origin from Lewis and the Western Isles of Scotland can be documented from the 10th Century. The Gaelic form of the name McBryan is mentioned in a 10th Century document from Iona, indicating that the McBryans settled in the Western regions of Scotland in the wake of the Viking invasions of Eire. The McBryans were later planted in the Northern Irish County of Fermanagh from about the middle of the 16th Century. Hence both its Protestant and Roman Catholic branches. It is also interesting that my great great grandfather, Hugh McBryan of Enniskillen, was a blacksmith, I too spent several of my years in the Household Cavalry as a farrier (blacksmith). Today the McBryans have a presence all around the world, mostly in Australasia, the USA and Canada, a few family members remain in Scotland, Ireland, London and Kingston in the West Indies.
